Damp Proofing Painting

Specialist damp treatments and waterproof coatings for problem walls

About This Service

Damp walls are a problem that cannot simply be painted over. Standard paint will peel and blister on damp surfaces, and painting over mould without treatment allows it to return within weeks. Our damp treatment and specialist painting service addresses the underlying causes of damp before applying appropriate waterproof or moisture-resistant coatings for a lasting result.

What Damp Proofing Painting Involves

  • Assessment of the source and extent of any damp problem
  • Treatment of mould and mildew with specialist fungicidal wash
  • Application of damp-proof seal or stain block to affected areas
  • Application of tanking compounds for severe damp areas
  • Waterproof exterior masonry coatings to prevent water ingress
  • Breathable coatings for solid-wall properties susceptible to trapped moisture

Why Use a Professional?

Damp treatment is a specialist area where incorrect diagnosis and treatment can cause significant damage. Using the wrong products — for example, impermeable coatings on solid masonry walls that need to breathe — can make damp problems worse. Our team understands the different types of damp and the appropriate treatment for each.

Our Process

1

Diagnosis

We investigate the source of the damp — rising, penetrating or condensation — to ensure the treatment addresses the correct cause.

2

Treatment

We apply the appropriate damp treatment — fungicidal wash, damp-proof seal, tanking slurry or other system as required.

3

Preparation

We allow surfaces to dry thoroughly and prepare them for overpainting.

4

Coating

We apply the appropriate final coating — waterproof, breathable or conventional as required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you just paint over damp walls?

No — this is ineffective and will result in rapid paint failure. The damp must be addressed and the wall treated before applying any coating.

What is the difference between rising damp and penetrating damp?

Rising damp comes up from the ground through the masonry. Penetrating damp comes through the external wall, often due to defective pointing or failed render. Each requires a different treatment approach.

Can damp walls be painted without replastering?

Often yes — damp-resistant sealers can be applied directly to masonry and then painted over. Severely damaged plaster will need to be replaced.

Do breathable paints really make a difference on old properties?

Yes — solid-wall Victorian and earlier properties need to breathe. Using impermeable masonry paints traps moisture in the walls and can lead to serious damage.
